The Chinese knot is a handcrafted woven artwork that embodies the sentiment and wisdom of ancient Han Chinese civilization. Originally stemming from knotting techniques used in the Paleolithic age for sewing, it evolved through the Han Dynasty as a means of ceremonial recording, and eventually transformed into today’s decorative craft. The Chinese knot was frequently used as an embellishment for Zhou Dynasty personal jade ornaments and featured in patterns on bronze objects from the Warring States period. However, it wasn’t until the Qing Dynasty that the Chinese knot truly became a widely circulated folk art.
In contemporary times, it is predominantly used for interior decoration, as gifts exchanged between friends and relatives, and as personal accessories. Its symmetrical and delicate appearance symbolizes the profound history of the Han ethnicity, aligning with traditional Chinese decorative customs and aesthetic concepts, hence earning the name “Chinese knot.” Within the realm of Chinese knots, there are various knot styles such as the double coin knot, button knot, pipa knot, round brocade knot, cross knot, auspicious knot, ten thousand character knot, coiled dragon knot, trefoil knot, double happiness knot, butterfly knot, and purse knot.
